Gunshi repelling training

Gunshi training in shinto

Gunshi was a born fighter, his family were fighters, his kids are fighters and his ancestors were all fighters, in the 1930's. his father fed his family by engaging in "boxcar" bouts, where those travelling on railroads across canada and the USA  would gather up a few pennies and put it into a hat, two men would be locked into cattle cars, and fight till one was beaten, he got the money, the other ended up licking his wounds.

Life for Gunshi was hard: He lived in a ghetto  where fighting was a way of life, lots of racism, and everyone was looking for an edge to come out on top, most of his childhood peers would end up in prison or dead, it was that kind of lifestyle that his life was based on, losing was not an option.

There are many aspect of his that are  interesting, but, his experience as a police officer is probably what defined him as a fighter.

Gunshi had just returned to Canada after living in the USA for 12 years, there he had perfected his skills and many of his students were into law enforcement, so he offered classes for police officers at his school in Canada

There were various officers from local towns and cities taking his courses, one group was from a town called Sackville, they were undergoing the take-over of their town by local drug dealers and thugs making their jobs a living hell.

One of these was a lawyer who wanted get a feel for what cops went though on the beat, so he worked as auxillary officer, but he ran into bad luck on the job, and was injured when the local bad guys roughed him up.

The deputy chief asked Gunshi if he would be willing to work as a special countstable to deal with these hoods. At first Gunshi wasn't interested, but he drove to Sackville in the evening to see what was going-on , and it was like the old west, more like the Charles Bronson movies : "Death Wish!".

Gunshi agreed he would work but he wanted there to be no other officers on his beat, no backup, no communications, from 9 pm till 8 am, 7 days a week, but he wanted the city to cover any liability.

He was hired, isssue a uniform, keys to the police station, and a gun and handcuff, and a patrol car, and for close to 2 years, he worked alone and cleaned up the town, one hood at a time, until, the police could again walk the beat.

There was one scrap after another, the hoods had a bounty of his head, and several guys tried to collect it, but ended tasting the sidewalk.

He was assaulted almost every 3rd day, one hood after another, often two or three at a time, yet, he never used a weapon, nor did he seriously injure any them,

Then, one night, there was loud noises coming from the business sector, so he drove there to see a very huge guy and a girl argueing, so he pulled  his cruiser over and told them to quiet down, then, the man punched him to the side of the head, and then all hell broke lose, it was a very brutal fight which ended with a very battered suspect who was rushed to the hospital, and the doctor pushed for excess force charges against  gunshi, and it went to court.

In court, everyone was dressed in street cothes, everyone was there, all the surrounding police, the friends of the suspect, and Gunshi and the suspect stood side by side while the judge addressed them both.

The judge said that a police officer of that size should able to handle a small suspect, then everyone started to laught, the Judge thought Gunshi was the victim, and the big guy was  the police, this was trully a strange sight, Gunshi stands a mere 5-7 inches, the hood was 6-2, so the judge threw the case out of court..

Later, Gunshi found out that the guy was from out of town, and an enforcer for the drug trade, and word got out that this was a town to be avoided by the hoods, and they decided to go elsewhere, and, at that point,  his job was done.

But, before he left, an incident changed his future law enforcement career forever. There was a car parked in front of a fast food chain, a woman told Gunshi that he was drunk, so Gunshi investigated, and the man was indeed drunk, so he was asked to get out of the car, but responded with : " Try and take me out! "

so he tasted the concrete sidewalk face down in a few secongs, was handcuffed, brought to the only place with a breathelizer, the nearest Mounty office (Mounties are like the FBI in Canada)

He turned the guy over to them, and left, the next morning, his chied came in early, he informed Gunsbi to let the guy go, drop all charges, the guy was a mountie who was a high officer in their crime lab.

Gunshi refused, and his law enforcement career was over, but he was quicly hired to teach at the police college, which was headed by ex-mounties, and there was tension from day one.

At the acadamy he tough drill, report writing, phys ed , arresting techniques, and SWAT or ERT as its known today. But he loved police work and tried to get a job, but nobody would hire a guy who turned another cop in.

It is estimated that in his two years as a special police officer, he was assaulted over 100 times, often with weapons, and in many of these cases, he had the option of using dedly force, or  his police baton, but this was a rare occassion for him to test his daito-ryu skills for real, many techniques did not work in a real fight, most did, so he gained a great insight into fighting.
